When we think of artificial intelligence (aka: AI). Hal 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) or Data (Star Trek Next Generation) comes to mind. But this isn’t what AI is, however the answer is very complex to explain. AI is divided into four broad categories:
- machines that think like humans
- machines that act like humans
- machines that think rationally
- machines that act rationally
When we think of computers that think like a human, IBM’s Watson comes to mind, which acts like a human when playing games, but doesn’t use the same rationality. The problem is trying to get a computer to do things that we do unconsciously, like vision, speaking and hearing. Common sense is another area that would take an enormous amount of programming to accomplish. The ability to decide what is acceptable and what is not. AI has made tremendous amounts of stride within the last few years, but still has a long way to go before it’s ready for prime time. With all the rapid advancements in technology and circuitry being made today an AI may be only a short vision away.
